Home Based Business - Which One is Best?

September 7th, 2008 by Business Marketing

Many people have asked this question for years without ever getting an answer. A home business, or work at home business; which one is best? Well, it depends on many factors that most people don’t think about:

  • What type of home business are you looking for?
  • How much money do you have to invest?
  • How much time can you invest on operating the business?
  • What type of business will you form; sole proprietorship, a partnership, corporation, or just working from your kitchen table?
  • What skills do you have that be transferred to a business?

The list can go on and on. Let’s look into the above choices more closely.

What type of home business are you looking for?

  • Do you want to sell a product?
  • Promote another company’s product
  • Act as a “middle-man” to get a commission?

How much money do you have to invest?

  • Are you strapped for cash or have plenty of money to spend?
  • Will you take out a loan or go to investors?
  • Either way, how much are you willing to spend (lose or invest)?

How much time can you invest on operating a business?

  • If you are still working at your “day-job”, you usually have limited time available.
  • Do you plan on starting the business then have other people run it for you?
  • Do you think a business just runs itself?

What type of business will you form; sole proprietorship, a partnership, corporation, or just working from your kitchen table?

  • For most home business, a sole proprietorship (or individual) is the way to go.
  • A partnership or corporation involves lawyers & much more money than you probably want to spend right now.

What skills do you have that be transferred to a business?

  • Many people say, “work at what you love and you’ll never really work at all”. That’s fine for some, but for most of us, we work at something we don’t really love just to pay the bills.

So what’s the answer?

For many people, the best and easiest work at home business is one where you can promote someone else’s product or service.

This is called “Affiliate Marketing”.

Look at the benefits;

  • Very little start-up costs (usually under $100.00)
  • Pick the product or service you want that interests you.
  • No need to form an “actual business”. This lowers your overhead.
  • No need for employees, just a computer connected to the internet.
  • You get paid a commission on everyone you recommend to that product or service.
  • You can work from home at your own pace, when you want too.

Sounds easy, right?

The only problem is what home based business is the right one for me?

Just type “work from home”, “work at home”, or “home based business” into any search engine and you will come up with more choices than you ever dreamed of. But most are just get rich quick scams or work at home business in name only.

Do your homework first before you join or pay for any work at home program. Search the internet for websites that review other home business programs. When you find the right one, you’ll be on your way to success. Good luck.
