Barclaycard marketing chief promoted.
Barclays has promoted Barclaycard chief marketing officer Elizabeth Chambers to oversee the UK retail bank marketing. Her new role as chief marketing officer for Barclays Global Retail and Commercial Banking follows a series of changes at the bank.

It also follows changes at Barclays” marketing teams following the departure of group brand and UK banking marketing director Jim Hytner last year (MW August 16).

The bank scrapped the group role, devolving marketing responsibility to a number of directors, including Dave Jeppeson to UK retail marketing director and Richard French as commercial marketing director (MW December 2007).

However, Chambers is expected to oversee both roles and will report directly to Barclays Global Retail and Commercial Banking executive committee headed by Frits Seegers, with a marketing budget of 350m.

Can”t hold fuel prices any more.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday sought a political consensus to raise fuel prices amid mounting pressure from cash-strapped oil marketing companies and growing concerns over soaring inflation.

Singh said it was no longer possible to insulate consumers at home from the sharp spike in global crude prices as there are limits to what the government and state-owned oil firms could give in subsidies.

‘Up to a point we can and we have indeed insulated poorer sections of our society,’ the prime minister told a meeting of business leaders in New Delhi.

Petrol and diesel prices were last increased in February this year by Rs 2 and Re 1 a litre respectively, but kerosene - the preferred cooking fuel of lower income groups - has remained unchanged for many years.

CMO Council study finds companies lag in aligning marketing and sales.
The majority of marketers lag in their ability to closely align sales and marketing, according to a new study by the Chief Marketing Officer Council.

According to an online survey of 506 sales and marketing professionals, 55% of respondents said their companies have not yet implemented formal programs, systems or processes for unifying sales and marketing functions.

Fewer than 20% of respondents said their sales and marketing organizations are extremely collaborative, while more than half said the two groups had intermittent relations and interactions.

Also, about half of respondents said they had trouble finding customer account data, did not have enough information or had none at all.

The survey was conducted by the CMO Council and the Coalition to Leverage and Optimize Sales Effectiveness (CLOSE).

The show business adage that ‘there”s no such thing as bad publicity’ is probably true about 99 percent of the time. But as the media ” and its consumers ” grow obsessively focused on the personal struggles of Hollywood stars, there are rare instances when even a little free exposure can be problematic.

On Friday, Paramount Pictures released ‘Drillbit Taylor,’ a new comedy starring Owen Wilson as a bodyguard hired by several high school students looking for bully protection.

The film has been accompanied by most of the marketing efforts typically associated with a national theatrical release ” including television promotions and coming attractions previews ” but you can look far and wide and not find Wilson conducting the kind of interviews that stars of his caliber usually do when they have a big movie to promote.
